Organisations must move toward AI competency if they want AI return on investment (ROI). AI literacy is just the start.
UK launch of AI competency framework consultation by the Alan Turing Institute
equitably.ai recently attended the national consultation launch for the “AI Skills for Business Competency Framework” hosted by The Alan Turing Institute.
The takeaway for equitably.ai and the learning and development leaders we work with was clear: if you want return on investment, you must build on tools and AI literacy to develop robust organisational AI competency linked to areas of highest AI impact.
During the session, the UK Government representative talked about their preparation for the impact of AI, with scenarios planned and close monitoring of labour market data, while investments are being made in initiatives like the AI Opportunities Action Plan and the Innovate UK BridgeAI programme, all part of the UK government’s goal to solidify the UK’s position as a world-class AI ecosystem.
There was good discussion of the research – equitably.ai has also been sharing the same – findings that while teams succeed in learning and piloting AI using tools, they often struggle to scale them. The panel discussed the AI “learning gap” in a gap in proficiency to apply AI, not just AI literacy or AI skills.
At equitably.ai, we have championed AI competency and the need for it to be anchored in professional quality standards and a quality AI programme. It is not enough to just “know AI”; you must have the skills to apply it effectively with positive impact and risk management.
We have been working on AI competencies and skills of professional bodies and universities. It was great to see the progress and be part of the consultation on AI competency framework of UK’s world-leading Alan Turing Institute, which included:
- Role-Based AI Competencies: One size does not fit all.
- Mapping AI Competencies to the AI Lifecycle: AI competency requirements change as AI programmes and projects move through their lifecycle.
- Embed Quality Competencies like Governance into AI competency development. Not just a compliance checkbox.
To stay competitive, your AI learning and development needs to be as robust as your data science process and AI tech stack. We are already integrating these national AI competency frameworks into our AI programmes in partnership with professional, industry and international bodies around the world.
