Maximising AI Impact Using Quality Competencies

A Gartner report predicts that, by 2026, more than 80% of enterprises will have integrated generative Al into their operations, a big jump from less than 5% in 2023, the year after ChatGPT became a household name.

However, according to Gartner, a significant number of Al projects face challenges scaling from pilot to production.

equitably.ai co-founder, John Paul Danaee tackles this challenge in a feature he wrote for the Quality World Magazine, titled: Maximising AI’s Impact Using Quality Competencies. He shows how proven professional quality competencies like improvement, context, governance, assurance and leadership can be used in AI quality to maximise the impact of AI and minimise risks.

Why do most AI pilots fail?

In the feature, John Paul shares research that AI projects often struggle to transition from pilot phases to full-scale production, “the AI pilot paradox”. He explains how “context” and “governance” that are talked about in data science communities are core professional quality competencies that when applied effectively can play a key role in overcoming these challenges.

AI standards and a better AI programme

John Paul covers AI regulations that quality professionals should be aware of: the European Union (EU) AI Act and UK laws such as the General Data Protection Regulation and their importance.

The feature in discussing the governance competencies covers, key regulations and standards related to AI and emphasises their importance in regulated sectors such as financial services where the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) uses their existing Senior Management Regime (here’s a video of FCA’s Head of Data Science talking about regulating AI) to hold senior managers accountable for AI oversight. However, this regulatory approach does not prescriptive as to how to exactly have AI governance and John Paul shows how quality competencies and framework can help.

Alongside his AI programme suggestion is a detailed summary of the International Organisations of Standards ISO/IEC 42001:2023 Information technology – Artificial intelligence – Management system.
