As Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming all sectors and processes including international trade and for companies that want to stay ahead, it is a must to learn AI for international trade and export.

According to McKinsey & Co, AI is expected to generate $19 trillion in global economic impact. Within international marketing, international trade and export alone, AI’s impact can be as much as $1.34 trillion and will reshape how businesses approach everything from market research for identifying the best market segments for export to deciding distribution to understanding customs and supply chain management.

Recognising this potential, equitably.ai recently teamed up with the UK Department for Business and Trade (DBT) to offer their AI training specialised for international marketing, international trade and export.

This learning was delivered in two key sessions—one for businesses during International Trade Week titled Realising Global Export Opportunities Efficiently and another designed specifically for DBT international trade advisors at their annual national learning event in London. The goal for both? help participants learn practical AI applications in international marketing, international trade and export to more confidently and efficiently tap into global export markets.

AI in International Trade: Empowering Companies to Succeed

During International Trade Week, we held the first learning session aimed at businesses looking to expand into export markets. The focus was on providing practical, actionable strategies to help companies learn AI marketing and apply it to real-world challenges.

We took a process-driven approach, breaking down common export challenges and showcasing how AI tools can help overcome these obstacles. Key topics included explaining what AI and machine learning, Natural Language Processing (NLP), generative vs. analytical AI, techniques for uncovering new market opportunities like how AI can refine market segmentation and measuring return on investment from marketing using AI to name a few.

Participants received hands-on practical experience by working through a real case study of a company planning to export to a new market and used basic AI tools.

More sophisticated AI methods like social listening, and sentiment analysis for consumer trends and predicting product demand were covered along with optimising pricing, and identifying the best retail locations.

These insights gave attendees practical steps to start their own AI journeys, whether they opted for off-the-shelf AI tools or custom solutions.

Equipping DBT International Trade Advisors with AI Expertise

The second session was customised for DBT advisors who help UK companies grow through exports, focusing on how AI and data science can transform the export process and make exporting more efficient.

We discussed various AI technologies, from generative AI, which helps with content creation, to analytic AI, which supports data-driven decision-making. Advisors gained insights on using AI for market research, market segmentation, pricing optimisation and marketing budget management, showing how AI models can even help companies maximise their return on marketing investment (ROMI) when expanding to new markets. A real-world example demonstrated how one company forecasted a $15.6 million revenue boost by optimising its marketing spend with AI.

While off-the-shelf tools work for many, as companies develop, they will need more customised and specialised AI integrations, like optimising their content marketing or email marketing. So we also discussed when one can know there is a need for customised AI solutions.

Why is it Crucial to Learn AI for International Trade and Export?

A key takeaway from both sessions was the growing importance of learning AI techniques for international trade and export. AI offers  efficient and fast solutions to some of the most pressing marketing challenges when expanding internationally, including:

  • Market Segmentation: AI can analyse large datasets to identify high-potential market segments, helping businesses find the right target market with increased accuracy.
  • Big Data Analysis: AI enables companies to sift through vast amounts of data, whether from public APIs, social media, or commercial datasets and gain actionable insights for smarter marketing decisions like the latest consumer trends.
  • Customer Personalisation: AI allows businesses to create personalised experiences for their customers, leading to increased engagement and improved satisfaction.
  • Marketing Budget Optimisation: AI-driven models help businesses allocate their marketing budgets more effectively, analysing different marketing channels to maximise return on marketing investment (ROMI).
  • AI-Powered Tools: Accessible tools like Midjourney (for creative content) and Robin AI (for contract management) were highlighted as useful options for businesses of all sizes, allowing them to learn to apply  AI without heavy development costs or the need for custom-built systems.

Both sessions encouraged attendees to embrace AI as a way to stay competitive in a fast-changing global landscape. The message was clear: AI is no longer just a trend; it’s an essential tool for navigating international trade. By taking a process-driven approach to AI, with agility to test and iterate companies can ensure they are part of the disruptive changes coming their way and won’t be left behind competition —and may even gain cost-efficient access to the type of methods and resources their larger competitors have.
